Stars sign Morrow for six years, $24.6M

I love the headline, but it's not me and there's no relation to Anthony Morrow. Darn. Not only is Brenden not related, he's now tied up with the Dallas Stars (boo!) for six more years, narrowing the hope that he'll end up in L.A. so I can buy a jersey with my name on it and not look like an idiot. I am a little sad every year when the trade deadline passes and Morrow isn't moved to the Kings.

New Season, Same Kings?
WED, 20 SEP 2006
Last night was the Kings' first pre-season home game for the 2006-2007 season. They hosted the San Jose Sharks. The night before, they beat up on the re-named Anaheim Ducks, winning 7-1. We weren't expecting a great game since most pre-season games are full of sloppy play and 2nd stringers and a lot of guys still shaking out the cobwebs of the off-season.

We had extra tickets and invited six friends to join us in cheering on the Kings. There wasn't much to cheer during the night. There was only one fight and the Kings gave up two first-period goals. They went 0-8 on the powerplay and it felt like the curse of Vanboxmeer. They gave up another goal in the 3rd. And yes, I booed Rob Blake, even as my buddy Chris sat next to me wearing a Blake jersey we let him borrow. Just as I promised, my boos turned to cheers as Blake netted the only Kings goal of the night with just 4:33 left to play.

It wasn't that the Kings lost, it was that they looked so much like last season's Kings. 0 for 8 - oh for heaven's sake! I checked the score sheet and was surprised to see they won 50% of the face-offs. There wasn't a line for timely face-off wins, but I'm guessing they were lacking in that department. It felt like it. And once again, we bring people to a game to experience the thrill of hockey and all they can do is wonder why the heck we go there. I'm starting to feel like a Clippers fan before last year.

The Kings' slogan this year is "Play Hard!" The guy who sits next to us always yells, "Play Better!" We know it was only a preseason game, but we'd settle for any improvement at this point.

NHL Teams & Cities Map Update
WED, 13 SEP 2006
NHL Teams & Cities Map - Updated for 2006-2007 SeasonI just finished updating my semi-popular NHL Teams & Cities Map for the 2006-2007 season.

There's really only two changes:

  1. The Anaheim Ducks logo replaces the Mighty Ducks logo.
  2. The Conference logos are updated.

I first made this map last year because I couldn't find one like it online. I wanted a map of North America showing where each NHL team was located. I found only one low-res version so I took up the cause and made this one with team logos, divisions, and exact locations.

Eventually, I'll use it to plan one of our hockey vacation trips where we'll go and hit 2-3 games in different cities over a 7-10 day span. The big trip will be when we get into New England and will try to go to Boston, NY, NJ, Philly, and DC games!

Off-Season Is Sports Season
MON, 11 SEP 2006
It's now been two weekends since racing ended for 2006. Just because I'm not racing doesn't mean I'm still not putting in some good efforts. For example, El Do, which usually ends in August, is now running the four weeks of September. I was out there last week Tuesday and I followed up with my usual Thursday night championships at Hughes. The real workout is coming from the weekends, where I've traded a lazy Saturday and racing Sunday for two long, climbing rides. For the last two weekends, I was out with Velocity on Saturday and Velo Allegro on Sunday. Each Saturday was about 50 miles and each Sunday was about 75. My legs are still trying to figure out where all the miles are coming from, all of a sudden. It's different riding than I get during the season. I'll be trying to get more longer, steady intensity rides and plenty of climbing.

I'll be ratcheting down the intensity through September and will start to cross-train with running, rollerblading, and weight lifting routines worked into my week. I never commit to a solid schedule, but it will probably work out to be: MON - run, TUE - weights, WED - climbing ride, THU - Hughes, FRI - rollerblade, SAT - long ride, SUN - long ride. I'll get another ride day in there somehow.

Kansas City Chiefs - NFL AFC WestThe nice thing about having the Sep. 10 race cancelled was I got to do my early morning ride and then got home in time to see the early NFL week 1 games around the 3rd quarter. I'm a home team guy, but L.A. has no NFL team. It wouldn't matter, because my favorite team is the Kansas City Chiefs. My friend, Frank, is a long suffering fan of the Cincinnati Bengals. Our teams were scheduled to open the season against each other at K.C.'s Arrowhead Stadium.

After I showered and raided the fridge, I turned on the TV and split the screen to see two games. We don't have DirectTV (we have cable), but even if we did, we're not big enough fans to get the NFL Sunday Ticket package. That's the only way I was going to see the K.C. game, so I had to keep and eye on the score crawl at the bottom of the screen. Then it went by, "Bengals 20, Chiefs 3". Oh man. But it got worse. At the next break, they showed Chiefs QB Trent Green taking a vicious, late hit from Cincinnati's Robert Geathers. Green, a steady producer for the team over five years, was knocked out cold. He ended up regaining consciousness but was fully immobilized and carted off. Later, the word was he was better but had suffered a concussion. Great, so not only does my team start the season 0-1, but our QB got his block knocked off and there's no telling when he'll play again.

Los Angeles Kings - NHL Pacific DivisionIn other sports news, the Kings will have their home pre-season opener at Staples Center on Tuesday, September 19. We are still undecided as to whether we will boo re-acquired defenseman, Rob Blake. It will probably work out where we boo him early on and then start cheering when he rockets his first juicy slapper from the blue line into the goal. What we do know for sure is we can't endure another Kings late-season meltdown!

Crikey!
TUE, 05 SEP 2006
Steve Irwin "Crocodile Hunter"I always enjoyed the enthusiasm Steve Irwin brought to his animal exploits. Just thinking about his grand gestures and exuberent voice makes me smile. It's a shame this entertainer and conservationist is gone, but at least he went down doing what he loved.
